Omicron, the latest variant of COVID-19 pandemic known for its highest transmissible rate compared to previous variants has been detected in Rwanda, the Ministry of Health as announced.
“The Ministry of Health has confirmed six cases of Omicron variant in Rwanda through genomic sequencing of samples collected from travelers and their contacts,” the communique reads in part.
“This variant has shown to spread rapidly,” the Ministry added in the communique published right after the cabinet meeting which also took resolutions meant to contain the spread of the latest variant.
On this note, the Ministry of health requested the general public to take the two doses of vaccination and the booster dose which is most recommended to the 50+ people and most categories most at risk.
As of December 14, Rwanda had vaccinated 6.9 million of people with first dose, while 4.2 million people had received two doses, and 27,220 booster doses.
