The Kigali Public Library has adjusted its access procedure to fit in the continued fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

The library seats are available as usual, but the number of visitors has been reduced from 300 to 100.

told KT Press that the number of daily visitors has been reduced from 300 to 100 to combat the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Following the previous cabinet meeting, we reopened doors for visitors and people who need to read books inside. However, we have reduced the number to stop the spread of Covid-19. No entry to people who did not book in advance,” Odon Nsengimana, the IT officer for Kigali Public Library has told KT Press.

To book a seat and room, the subscriber goes to https://www.kplonline.org/ and follows procedures.

The 32-year-old library so far has a collection of 19,000 physical books and 30,000 digital books which serve researchers, students, and other people who read for leisure.

Nsengimana said that readers can access digital books by using any device such as a computer as well as a mobile phone that has enabling applications.

One of the applications for library e-books and audiobooks is Libby by OverDrive available on Android and iPhone.

According to Nsengimana, the public library remains free. However, people willing to borrow books and take them home pay some fee.

Adults pay Rwf1000 monthly and University students, Rwf800 per month. Primary and secondary students have to raise Rwf500 if they want to take a book home.

Annual subscription ranges between Rwf 5000 for Primary school students to Rwf 10,000 for adults. University students pay Rwf 8000.
