Relocation from Mazane in previous phase
The last batch of residents living at the remote and high risk Mazane Island in Lake Rweru, Bugesera district will be relocated to an inland model village by March 2019 officials say.
The final (third) re-location phase will consist of 140 families that will be settled in Rweru model village joining 144 families that were relocated in July 2016.
Mazane was labelled high-risk zone by Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) because it had no clean water, no health or education facilities and was constantly prone to floods and other disasters.
Richard Mutabazi, Mayor of Bugesera district told KT Press that construction of 140 houses that will host the families is at finishing phase.
“The construction of houses is almost done, by March this year, we shall start relocating the families. We hope by June Mazane will be an empty island,” Mutabazi told KT Press in an interview.
A wide view of Rweru village
Rweru model village in Bugesera district Eastern Province is a modern neighborhood with access to clean water, modern schools, health center, modern market and access to Internet connection.
According to Mutabazi, upon arrival, 140 families will be given cows.
Mutabazi told KT Press that families from Sharita Island, another similar Island will be relocated to Rweru model village in July.
Sharita Island has about 120 families.
