MUKURA Victory Sports will on Friday this week know their opponent in the play-off round of the Total CAF Confederation Cup.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will hold the draw ceremony for the Play-Off Round contest on Friday in Cairo, Egypt.
The thirty qualified clubs include Rwanda’s Mukura VS,Sudanese Al Hilal, Cameroon’s Coton Sport and New Star, Kenya’s Gor Mahia, Mali’s Stade Malien, Libya’s Al-Ahly Benghazi, Zambia’s Nkana FC, Congo’s AS Otoho, Ethiopia’s Jimma Aba Jifar, Lesotho’s Swatini’s Bantu FC, Egypt’s Al-Nasr SC, Zamalek, Morocco’s Ittihad Tanger, Raja Casablanca RS Berkane and Hassania Agadir, Namibia’s African Stars, Senegalese side ASC Diaraf, Uganda’s Vipers SC and KCCA, Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien, Algeria’s NA Hussein Dey, Angola’s Petro de Luanda, Burkina Faso’s Faso Salitas, Ghana’s Asante Kotoko, Cote d’Ivoire’s FC San Pedro, Nigeria’s Enugu Rangers and South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs.
The Huye-based side Mukura VS booked a slot in the play-offs round of the Total CAF Confederation Cup after beating Sudanese side Al Hilal SC Obayed 5-4 in penalty shootouts following a goalless draw, in regular time, in a nail-biting and dramatic game at Huye Stadium on Saturday.
Christophe Ndayishimiye, Onesme Twizerimana, Innocent Ndizeye, Iddy Saidi Djuma and Gael Duhayindavyi slotted in their penalties for the hosts to send Hilal Obayed packing.
Hilal Obayed’s Yousuf Ibrahim, whose penalty hit the post, was the only taker who failed to convert his penalty.
Mukura could have scored in the second half to put the game to bed in regular time but Ndayishimiye, Frank Lomami, Nduhayindavyi and Hussein Ciza failed to make the difference from a string of clear chances.
This is the first time that the Huye-based outfit has progressed past the first round of the continent’s second biggest club competition since their 1982 debut.
Francis Haringingo’s reached the first round after edging out South Africa’s Free State Stars in the preliminary round earlier this month.
The Peace Cup holders, Mukura VS, are taking part in the continental showpiece for the first time in 18 years, since 2000 when they were knocked out from the first round by Ethiopian side Awassa City.
The Play-off round action will begin in January with the first leg slated for January 11-13, 2019 while the return leg will be staged between January 18-20, 2019.
The winners of the Play-off round contest will progress to the lucrative group stage whose action is slated for February, 2019.
