Officials from Rwanda and Tanzania are expected to meet and make final decision on the official kick off for the construction of Isaka-Kigali railway project, KT Press has learnt.

In January this year, a communiqué that was signed by transport Ministers from both countries indicated that the project would be launched in October 2018.

Rwanda will contribute $1.2 billion on construction of 150km network, while the rest, $1.3 billion will be contributed by Tanzania.

In May this year, State Minister for Transport Eng. Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye said that the kick off for construction works will begin around December this year.

In a phone interview with KT Press on Monday, Patricie Uwase – the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure said that officials from both countries will soon meet to make final decisions on the construction works.

She said that officials from both countries were supposed to meet on Monday this week, but Tanzanian officials were still engaged in other assignments.

“The Heads of State want this project to start soon. We have been meeting with officials on the Tanzania side. We are waiting for Tanzanian officials and meet to make final decisions,” she told KT Press.

Meanwhile, Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure Claver Gatete met and held discussions on the project with his Tanzanian counterpart – Eng. Isack Kamwelwe on October 22.

The two Ministers reviewed the progress and policies and strategic actions to facilitate construction of the project.
