FIFA President Gianni Infantino arrived in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the 8th FIFA Council Meeting.
The 8th FIFA Council Meeting is scheduled for Friday, 26 October 2018 at 9am at Kigali Convention Center in Kigali City.
He was met on arrival at the Kigali International Airport by President of Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA), Mr. Sekamana Jean Damascene.
Rwanda was chosen hosts of the 8th FIFA Council Meeting during FIFA’s first meeting of the year held in March, 2018 in Bogotá, Colombia.
The FIFA Council Meeting which will attract over 100 delegates from different confederations across the globe will focus on issues pertaining to the development of football.
Other delegates namely Presidents, Vice Presidents, selected Executive Committee Members and General Secretaries of Confederations from CONMEBOL, AFC, UEFA, CAF, CONCACAF and OFC, and various FIFA Commission members are also expected in Kigali on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
The FIFA Council Meeting will among other key issues discuss on the plans to revamp the Club World Cup and introduce a global nation’s league.
According to reports, the proposals outline what would effectively be a mini-World Cup, featuring eight international teams, every two years in addition to the traditional event.
The tournament, known as the “Final 8,” would be the climax of a proposed global nations league competition.
The new tournament would take place every October and/or November of every odd year starting from 2021, while the Confederations Cup, currently staged every four years in a year before the World Cup, would be abolished.
The annual Club World Cup, which currently features seven teams, would be expanded to 24 teams and moved to once every four years, according to the proposals.
The Times reported yesterday that Liverpool, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Ajax, AC Milan and Inter Milan would be invited to take part in the first iteration of the new Club World Cup.
The meeting also on ratify decisions of the Bureau of the Council of 11 and 27 August 2018 regarding the situation of the Ghana Football Association, decision of the Bureau of the Council of 13 August 2018 regarding the situation of the Nigeria Football Federation, decision of the Bureau of the Council of 31 August 2018 regarding the situation of the Cameroonian Football Association and decision of the Bureau of the Council of 5 October 2018 regarding the situation of the Sierra Leone Football Association.
