Building Learning Foundation, a program of the Ministry of Education that aims at improving teaching practice in English and Maths at P1-P3 has unveiled a plan to train 800 primary school teachers to improve English litteracy.
According to BLF officials, the online program was initiated to spearhead the success of 3-year building learning foundations program worth Rwf25 billion that kicked off early match this year.
The teachers mentor online program, to kick-start early September this year, will launch with a 2-week face to face training in Muhanga, Bugesera, and Gasabo districts by trainers from UK.
According to Julian Parry from the British Council, mentor trainers will proceed with hands on training (face to face) lessons including; computer log-on, off and entering the virtual class (online) to interact with a trainer who will be based in London.
The Chief Executive of Education Development Trust that manages the programme Dr Patrick Brazier visited the country to have a feel of what is being achieved. He applauded the government’s commitment to supporting quality education in Rwanda.
After the first phase, trainees will pursue online lessons including; early child teaching skills, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking English language.
BLF officials say, the 800 mentors who are considered as trainers of trainers will in turn give best English and Mathematics skills to teachers in their own schools thereby improving learning outcomes of about 2.6 million primary children at P1, to P3.
The BLF programme also focuses on supporting head teachers to improve school leadership as well as strengthen systems at school, sector, district and national levels in relation to data use and management leading to better decision making.
