Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the latest high ranking French official to have visited Rwanda in the last 23 years is in Rwanda.
“President Kagame receives former French President Nicolas Sarkozy at Urugwiro Village,” reads an official tweet from office of the president.
Upon arrival to Rwanda, Sarkozy was received by President Paul Kagame at Village Urugwiro.
Sarkozy is the only French President to have visited Rwanda after the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi. He visited Rwanda in February 2010.
Several French officials are alleged to have been implicated in this Genocide.
While in Rwanda, Sarkozy only acknowledged some failures to secure those that were being killed but Rwanda is still waiting for the country to make an official apology for role of France in the Genocide.
Rwanda also wants France to cooperate in bringing to justice French officials that are alleged to have played a role in the Genocide.
In the 29th Session of the Universal Period Review (UPR) in Geneva, on Monday, it was revealed that France is doing little to arrest Genocide fugitives on its land.
