It may be hard to imagine but a new survey has found that nearly 8000 families were decimated completely in the 1994 genocide – leaving no single person to continue the family lineage.
The survey conducted by survivors group GAERG in 17 of the 30 districts of Rwanda shows that 7,797 families were completely wiped out in the 100-day carnage.
The researchers determined that all the elderly, women, men and children of those families had been erazed from life. The team found a total of 34,823 victims.
This Saturday May 27, there will be a commemoration event in Rubavu district for these families. The annual event, organised on a rotational basis at different memorial sites, is attended by hundreds from across Rwanda.
The survey has been done for several years. This year alone, GAERG identified 886 families whose 4,256 members were completely wiped out in Rutsiro, Rubavu and Nyabihu – all in western Rwanda.
