Police have submitted to the Prosecutor General a file of a suspect alleged to be the killer of supposed member of FDU-Inkingi political grouping.
Demobilised Cpl Jean Damascène Habarugira was found dead last week and his name made headlines in the local and foreign press. Though unknown even in his community, it was reported he was “senior member” of the FDU-Inkingi political grouping of jailed Victoire Ingabire.
The United Democratic Forces (FDU) Inkingi is not registered as a political party. Its leader Ingabire is serving 15 year jail for genocide ideology and terrorism.
The National Public Prosecution Authority told KT Press on Friday that it had received the file of the Habarugira’s killer. The suspect is now under our jurisdiction and will be charged in court soon, said spokesperson Faustin Nkusi.
Habarugira who hails from Remera sector, Ngoma district in Eastern province was declared missing by family members. But last week, his lifeless body surfaced in neighbouring Bugesera district, several kilometres from his home.
Press reports about Habarugira’s death were based on statement from FDU-Inkingi which said he was a prominent member. But in his village, KT Press found he was not known to be politically active.
