The national road championships have been called off hours before the start due the coronavirus pandemic restrictions.
Initially scheduled in June, the races had been planned to take place this weekend with cyclists gearing up for what would be their only national race of the year, after an unprecedented 9-month hiatus caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Rwandan Cycling Federation confirmed the cancellation that was scheduled this weekend, meaning there will not be national champions this year.
The two-day event was supposed to see the junior, under-23, elite men and women’s races taking place with individual time trial races on Saturday and road races on Sunday.
The Rwandan Cycling Federation (FERWACY) had outlined safety measures teams and races organisers must take before and during races to curb the spread of coronavirus.
However, with the coronavirus-imposed ban on mass gatherings and fans not allowed for sporting events, it was unclear how the cycling races, which usually attract crowds along the roads, would go ahead.
