A sole goal – an equalizer by Amavubi striker Ernest Sugira in the game against Ethiopia’s Wallas has given Rwanda qualification for the African Nations Championship (CHAN2020) in Cameroun.
In this return leg that was played at Kigali regional stadium, the Wallas spared no effort to score and actually win after losing to Amavubi 1-0 in the first leg last month in Addis Ababa.
It was not until the 72th minute when, following a mistake of Manzi Thierry, the Ethiopian striker Lemene Mesfin Tafessa scored for the Wallas, giving them hope that their route to CHAN 2020 Cameroun was still open.
The Amavubi stars head coach, Rwanda’s Vincent Mashami who was keenly following the move quickly made a replacement and brought in Jean Claude Iranzi, sending back to the bench Niyonzima Olivier Sefu.
This re-energized the team, and on 83th minute, thanks to a beautiful pass from Ombolenga Fitina, striker Ernest Sugira who was well positioned did a good finishing, scoring the equalizer.
Thus, Rwanda’s aggregate 2-1 against Ethiopia in both legs gave Amavubi ticket to CHAN 2020.
This marks the fourth consecutive qualification of Amavubi Stars.
