Peace Cup 2019: APR FC, Mukura VS Exit as Rayon Sports Cruise to Quarter Final Round

Rayon Sports on path for a double this season

Eight-time Peace Cup winners APR FC faced an exit from the 2019 Peace Cup Competition after they failed to overturn a first leg defeat to settle for a goalless draw in the return leg to bow out 1-0 on aggregate in the 1/8th round.

In Sunday’s return leg staged at Stade de Kigali, APR FC who needed a 2-0 win to advance failed to find the net as AS Kigali defended able-bodied to maintain their first leg victory.

The military side who has struggled to win the league title this season, only to be won by arch rivals Rayon Sports is expected to miss out on CAF Club competitions season which kicks off in August this year.

In the exit chamber, APR FC was joined by reigning champions Mukura VS who were eliminated by SC Kiyovu 3-2 on aggregate, Espoir FC who exited on an away goal rule following a 1-all draw by Gicumbi FC in Rusizi, Etoile de l’est FC who were beaten by Police FC 2-3 on aggregate and Bugesera FC who were eliminated by second division side Intare FC 2-4 on aggregate.

Quarter Final Round

League title champions Rayon Sports look set to be on the path for a double this season as they have drawn Gicumbi FC in the quarter final round.

Rayon Sports FC managed to come from behind to defeat Marines FC 2-1 in the return leg held at Stade Kicukiro thus qualifying 2-1 on aggregate.

Intare FC, usually known as the grooming base for APR FC and features in the second division league will face-off SC Kiyovu in the last eight; AS Kigali will take on Gasogi United while Police FC will take on Etincelles FC who oversaw Hope Fc 5-2 on aggregate.

The first leg matches are scheduled to be played on June 19 and 20 while the return leg will be underway on June 22 and 23 respectively.

Winners will qualify to the semi-final round with eventual winners earning automatic tickets to the feature in the final slated for July 4, 2019.

The 2019 Peace Cup champion will represent Rwanda at the 2019/2020 CAF Confederations Cup Competition slated to kick-off in August.
