Regional Clubs Descend to Kigali Ahead of Zone V Club Volleyball Championship

APR and REG are among the five teams, along with Gisagara, Kirehe and UTB, that will represent Rwanda in a regional tournament due this week in Kigali 

Seven regional clubs are expected in Kigali today ahead of the inaugural edition of the regional Africa Zone V Club Championship slated for February 20-23 at Amahoro Stadium.

According to the hosts Rwanda Volleyball Federation, all regional clubs namely: Ugandan trio of Nemo Stars, Sport S and KAVC, Burundi’s Amical, Tanzania’s Jeshi Stars and Ethiopian pair of Wolaitha Dicha Sport club and Madda Walabu University.

Rwanda will be represented by five teams namely; REG, Gisagara, UTB, APR and Kirehe who have been offered a wild card to the tournament.

Following the arrival of the participating teams, a technical meeting will be held later today to decide the pairing of the teams in the tournament.

The tournament starts on Wednesday with preliminary round matches with winners progressing through to the quarter-final while the final will be held on February 23.

With Rwf. 15 million injected into the tournament, the winning team will pocket USD $ 1200 on top of medals and the trophy while 1st and 2nd runners-up will take USD$ 800 and USD$ 500 with medals inclusive.

The Zone V Board members will also meet on February 22nd to deliberate on key issues concerning the region.

Gustave Nkurunziza, the Africa Zone V president said recently that the tournament will benefit participating teams in terms of preparations ahead of this year’s CAVB African Club Championship to be staged in Egypt on April 1-10.
