The One&Only Nyungwe House, formerly Nyungwe lodge has regained its status in the hospitality industry reclaiming a solo winner in the five star category of the 2018 Rwanda hospitality grading exercise carried out each two years.
The hotel, located in Nyungwe National park in Western part of Rwanda, beats other 57 facilities including hotel lodges, apartments, motels which qualified out of the 86 facilities that were evaluated.
The One and Only Nyungwe House joins Serena Hotel, Mariott Hotel Kigali and Radisson Blue Kigali on the table of the top four hotels of the country. They were ranked on this position on the October 2017 ranking.
High Ground Villa and apartments in the capital Kigali, Classic Lodge and Fatima Lodge in Musanze (Northern Province), Moriah Hill Resort in Karongi District (Western Province) and the one year old Epic Hotel & Suites in Nyagatare, Eastern province, emerged among the top four.
They are joining Sabyinyo Silver Back, Gorilla Golf Hotel, La Palisse Nyamata, Ubumwe Grand Hotel, Lemigo Hotel and Hotel des Mille Collines among others that were ranked last year.
In the rankings, 19 hotels received three-star category while 26 fell into the two-star category while six were ranked as one-star facilities.
In the three star category, the list include the Nyarutarama based Hotel Villa Portofino in the capital Kigali, and Kami Executive apartment in Kagugu, Kinyinya sector.
The Pentecostal church-owned Dove Hotel in Gisozi sector, Gasabo district, also emerged in three star category.
Other hotels that emerged among the three star include Hill View Lake Kivu, D-Mall Hotel, Delta Ressort Hotel, Centre Diocesain Pastoral Nshuti, Olympic Hotel, Kivu Paradise Hotel, Bamboo Restaurant&Hotel, Nyagatare Diplomat Hotel, Best View Hotel and the Huye based Centre D’Acceuil Mater Boni Concili, Kivu Peace View Hotel and Sheba Hotel.
The recently launched Onomo Hotel in Kigali is also 3 star.
Several hotels that have been catering for travellers and civil servants going upcountry on field have been ranked, but they could not manage more than 2 stars.
Thus, Golden Monkey Hotel is the luxurious hotel in Nyamagabe district with its 2 stars. Huye based Hotel Credo is also in this category.
The facilities were accessed by 24 judges on various areas including environmental friendliness, hygiene and sanitation, services and facility standards.
Minister of Local Government Anastase Shyaka, the chief guest at the event said that hospitality has potentials to improve and the rankings aims at showing gaps that need to be bridged.
Shyaka said “This is the only way to make the private sector richer, and it calls for continues improvement to contribute to our national transformation strategy,” he said.
“Tourism brought in close to half billion dollar last year but by 2024 we expect close to one billion which is a double digit growth. We expect you to contribute to that,” he said.
The head evaluation Emmanuel Nsabimana revealed that most of the hotels had difficulties meeting requirements of lobbies, mixed up restaurants and bar areas, suites without full requirements yet very important and non-existence of human resource management with many non-contracted workers.
