The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has uncovered 58 ammunitions in Rubavu, a district neighboring with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)-Western Rwanda.
The degraded explosives of heavy weapons were found by farmers at Gafuku Village, Gikombo Cell of Rubavu Sector.
In 1994, the place served as a military base for the former Force Armées Rwandaise (EX-Far). It is alleged that they were the ones who hid them underground after defeat as they headed to DRC.
“We found them while digging for construction of a new house,” Jean Paul Habimana, a resident of the area told Kigali Today Kinyarwanda, a sister website to KT Press.
Residents told our reporter that they are scared there might be more ammunitions in the ground because it is for the third time they were discovered in the same circumstances.
However, RDF assured them.
“Residents should be calm. There is no big problem of mines that would endanger their lives. If they suspect any, they can report them so that we demine them,” Lt. Col Innocent Munyengango, RDF spokesperson told KT Press.
He reminded that the demining exercise was concluded successfully in 2009 across the country.
