The People’s Republic of China has awarded scholarships to 12 Rwandan students who are expected to acquire skills the country needs most to develop further.
Sponsored students will pursue human Medicine, Aeronautical engineering, Clinical medicine, Petroleum, Agriculture and Electricity engineering.
Six of them will pursue Master’s Programs while three others will go for Bachelor’s Degree and Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) respectively.
“After getting skills in these fields, I think they will have social and economic impact to the society because they have been shortlisted in areas where the country has priority,” said Michelle Ntukanyagwe, Head of policy Planning Scholarships and Fund Management at Higher Education Council (HEC).
“I am going to China to study, then come back to serve my country,” Arianne Kaligirwa, a scholarship candidate who qualified for the scholarship told KT Press.
Kaligirwa said, the key criteria of selection for the scholarship was academic performance.
Speaking at the send-off ceremony at the Embassy of China in Kigali- August 17, Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda, Henry Rao Hongwei said; “I’m pretty sure that you will have rewarding, fruitful and enjoyable stay in China.”
Hongwei further noted that, China-Rwanda relations have entered a new era since H. E. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, paid a historic state visit to Rwanda from 22nd to 23rd July, 2018.
“The two Heads of State re-affirmed to strengthen political mutual trust, connect China-Rwanda development strategies, and promote bilateral exchanges in all areas,” Hongwei said.
