Rayon Sports sets up Azam Fc clash in Kagame Cup Last Eight

Rwandan side Rayon Sports Fc will face reigning champions Azam FC in the quarter final round of the 2018 CECAFA Kagame Cup Tournament.

Rayon Sports Fc booked a quarter-final slot after beating Lydia Ludic of Burundi 3-1 in a final Group B match staged at Azam Sports Complex in Chamazi on Thursday night.

Goals from centre back Rwatubyaye Abdul in the 20th minute, Muhire Kevin in the 49th minute and skipper Pierre Kwizera in the 71st minute earned Rayon Sports Fc a second-place finish point on five points with Kenyan champions Gor Mahia FC who also beat AS Ports of Djibouti 2-0 at National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

A FIFA fair play rule saw Rayon Sports drop to second spot in Group Standings while Kenyan side Gor Mahia qualified as the top ranked side after their players accumulated only 4 yellow cards in the group stage compared to 5 accumulated by Rayon Sports players.

The Blues will face Azam FC, 2015 CECAFA Kagame Cup winners on Monday in the third quarter final fixture of the tournament at National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Azam FC finished on top of Group A standings with 7 points in three matches followed by Ugandan league champions Vipers SC who managed 5 points, Zanzibar’s JKU was the first best loser on 4 points and a +1 goal difference while Kator FC were ejected out of the tournament with no point.

In the other quarter final pairings, Kenyan side Gor Mahia will take on Uganda’s Vipers SC on Sunday at National Stadium while Tanzanian league champions SC Simba who topped Group C with 7 points will face AS Ports of Djibouti. AS Ports finished third in Group B with 4 points and a -1 goal difference to qualify as the second best loser.

On Monday, Azam FC will face Rayon Sports in an earlier game that will be held at National Stadium before Group C second-place side Singida United takes on Zanzibar’s Jeshi La Kujenga Uchumi (JKU).
