Rwanda sailed to a bright start defeating reigning champions Tanzania 1-0 in the opening game of the CECAFA Women Challenge Cup which started on Thursday at Stade de Kigali.
Kalimba Alice who plies her trade with Rwandan League AS Kigali WFC scored the all-important goal in the 34th minute for the hosts to cement their perfect start to the tournament.
The match was graced by the Sports and Culture Minister Uwacu Julienne alongside other dignitaries.
In an earlier game which was staged at 14h00, Uganda Women National Team-Crested Cranes edged Kenya 0-1 courtesy of a 7thminute strike from teenager Lillian Mutuuzo.
After the first day, Rwanda and Uganda tops the standings with three points each.
The tournament Hosts Rwanda, defending champions Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia are taking part in the Fifa-sponsored championship which will run until July 27.
Friday is a rest day with action resuming on Saturday at Stade de Kigali.
The tournament is being played on a league basis, the team topping the table will be the declared winner.
