Marie Chantal Rwakazina Elected Kigali City Mayor

Marie Chantal Rwakazina, new Mayor – City of Kigali

Kigali City councilors have elected Marie Chantal Rwakazina as new City Mayor to replace Pascal Nyamurinda who resigned on April 10th, 2018 citing personal reasons.

Rwakazina 45, got 146 votes against 8 votes for her only challenger Murekatete Henriette.

The new Kigali City Mayor is a holder of Master’s Degree in Development studies from Luxembourg(2001-2003) and has been serving as Coordination Analyst at UN – Rwanda.

She is not new in local government though. Previously, she served as Deputy Secretary General of the Rwandese Association of Local Government Authorities (RALGA) where she was in charge of coordinating the strategic and operational plans implementation for the association.

Rwakazina is also board member of Rwanda Governance Board (RGB).

From 2000-2008 she was lecturer of Development Studies and Statistics at the National University of Rwanda (NUR).

From October 2005 to January 2008 she served as Head of Department of Applied Statistics in Faculty of Economics and Management.

The electoral college of the executive committee of the City of Kigali comprises: members of Kigali City Council; district councils constituting the City of Kigali; and members of the bureau from all Sectors constituting the City of Kigali.

The executive committee of city of Kigali is elected for a 5 year term renewable once.
