On Wednesday, President Paul Kagame convened cabinet at Village Urugwiro specifically to discuss a critical point in the country – disasters that have caused a loss of more than 100 human lives in the last four months.

A new report by Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (Midimar) has indicated that 116 people died as a result of floods, landslides and other rain-related disasters between January and April.

Also thousands of hectares of crops were destroyed, buildings were ruined and livestock killed.

Cabinet sympathized with those who lost their loved ones during the disasters, or those that were affected by the disasters in one way or the other.

Thereafter, the cabinet took response measures in areas of supporting families that were affected by the disasters and quick rehabilitation where applicable.

Cabinet also called for sustainable disaster prevention and preparedness and agreed that the way to go is to protect the environment and infrastructure, decent settlements and farming practices.
