Senegal Tour: Uwizeyimana Jumps into Second Spot on GC

Team Rwanda Rider Bonaventure Uwizeyimana made stride improvements on the fifth day of the 17th Tour du Senegal as he finished second to grab the second spot on the general classification.

Stage five of Tour du Senegal saw riders covering 158.2km from Thies to Ndangane on Thursday.

Uwizeyimana managed a second-place finish after clocking 3h28:14 to come behind German-born rider Jurgen Jan Niklas.

Ukiniwabo Jean Paul Rene finished fourth to come five seconds behind the leading group.

The impressive performances of Uwizeyimana earned a crucial improvement as he jumped 20 places into second slot on the General Classification to go only 14 seconds behind the Algerian leader Reguigui Youcef who had a rough day on Thursday as he finished sixth, two minutes and five seconds behind Uwizeyimana.

Munyaneza Didier is the other Rwandan ranked inside the top ten were he is 41 seconds behind the Algerian leader Youcef.

 The 2018 edition of the Tour du Senegal begun on Sunday and will run through to April 29 across the coastal West African nation. Hadi, 27, is resurfacing on international scene for the first time in two years, following his brief one-year retirement.

The 2018 Tour du Senegal has attracted a record 19 teams, twelve national teams and seven Continental Tour teams. Algeria’s Islam Mansouri won the race last year.

The eight-day race is made up of eight stages across different parts of Senegal. On Friday, riders will cruise 114.9km from Ndangane to Ngueniene.
