CAF President Ahmad Pays Tribute to Genocide Victims

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Mr. Ahmad paid a memorable visit to the Kigali Memorial Centre on Sunday.

The CAF President has been in Kigali City since Saturday on a three-day official visit.

President Ahmad, who hails from Madagascar, had a first-hand sense of the horrors of the past that led to the 1994 Genocide in which up to one million innocent Tutsis and moderate Hutus perished in one of the most horrible and systematically planned genocides in history.

The CAF boss was accompanied by FERWAFA president Nzamwita Vincent, Largadere Director Idrissa Akki, Celestin Musabyimana, Organising Committee of the Africa Cup of Nations Member, CAF Advisor Hedi Hamel and Ferwafa Executive Committee members among others.

His first act was to pay tribute to the victims of genocide by laying a wreath on the mass graves. Away that, he then took a quiet tour of the exhibitiom to reflect on the long history that led to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi before leaving a message in the guest book.

After the visit, Ahmad said, “These are sad memories that we should let the next generation to know and such kind of acts to never happen again. We join hands with Rwandans who lost their loved ones during this tragic 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. We must jointly ensure that there is a better future for those who survived and for the generations to come. May the souls of victims of the genocide give hope to a rejuvenated Rwanda,”

The CAF boss donated $2000 (Rwf.1.7m) towards Kigali Memorial Centre to help them in the maintenance of the centre and in their campaign of continuous genocide prevention and the fight against genocidal ideology,”

“This centre has to be maintained such that the next generation can learn from this history such that Genocide can never ever happen again across the globe,” added Ahmad.

On Monday, Ahmad will be a guest speaker at the Forum program organized by the African Union of Broadcasting which will be held at Kigali Covention Center before concluding his visit with a press conference scheduled to be held at 13:00 prior to his departure back to Cairo, Egypt later in the evening.
