Reigning champions Rwanda Energy Group (REG) basketball club proved a strong to break as they claimed clean sheets against Rusizi and IPRC South basketball clubs in the on-going 2017/2018 national basketball league season.
The league which was in its match day three was played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively.
On Friday, IPRC Kigali staged a shocking display to snatch their win of of the season against Patriots BBC 95-92. Thanks to Gilbert Nijimbere’s brilliance and talent, IPRC Kigali went into half-time leading 58-40.
The 21-year old Nijimbere scored a game high 28 points while Leonard Hitayezu added 15 points for the victors. Former IPRC- Kigali’s duo of forwards Steven Havugintwari (27 points) and Dieudonne Ndizeye (21 points) combined for a total 48 points for the Patriots.
This was IPRC Kigali’s maiden win this season as they had lost their two opening matches.
Another game played on Friday, four-time league winners Espoir defeated United Generation Basketball (UGB) 91-66 with Espoir’s Pascal Niyonkuru scoring a game high 25 points and Regis Gatoto added 20 points, while Emile Uwiringiyimana led UGB with 17 points.
On Saturday, REG registered their second victory of the season as they smashed IPRC South 75-58 with Kami Kabange scoring a game high 32 points.
The reigning champions extended their unbeaten run into the third game as thrashed Rusizi basketball club 105-51 away in Rusizi District.
REG won three quarters 30-11, 32-14, 27-8 before the Rusizi-based sisde secured the fourth quarter 16-18 Kami Kabange scoring a total 35 points while his counterpart Mukengera snatched 25 points.
