Reigning league champions Rwanda Energy Group (REG) and IPRC South proved their readiness ahead of the new season as they won the 2017 edition of the Rwanda Basketball Federation (FERWABA) pre-season tournament which climaxed on Sunday at Amahoro indoor stadium.
After edging defending champions Patriots 72-67, REG went on to defeat IPRC Kigali 76-71 in the men’s final played on Sunday night. REG started poorly as they lost the first quarter by a four-point margin with IPRC Kigali taking it with a 20-16 victory.
Led by Kaje Elie and Ngandu Bienvenu, REG returned back to win the second quarter 23-17 but lost out the third quarter 22-13 before winning the decisive final quarter 24-12.
IPRC Kigali players Nijimbere Guibert, Nyamwasa Bruno and Ndoli Jean Paul scored highest points in the game as they bagged 19 points, 15 points and 14 points respectively while Ngandu Bienvenu (REG) managed 13 Points.
In the women’s category round-robin action, IPRC South was crowned champion as they defeated APR basketball club 73-55. Nzaramba Cecile scored highest points for IPRC South with 23 points while APR’s Umugwaneza Charlotte earned 13 points for the military side.
In the battle for the third place, Patriots basketball club defeated APR BBC 72-58 with Mugabe Aristide scoring 21 points while Ruzigande Ally manage 19 points for the military side.
The FERWABA Pre-season tournament was staged as a preparation stint for the upcoming 2017/18 National Basketball League season scheduled to start on December 1, 2017.
