Construction of 51km Base-Gicumbi-Rukomo is in good progress says Jean Marie Vianney Gatabazi, Governor Northern Province.

“Construction works of the tarmac road is impressive,” Gatabazi said in a tweet.

In 2014, government and the African Development Bank (AfDB) signed a concessional loan agreement worth $ 74.4 million to finance the project with an additional $4.6 million from government.

The financing agreement involves a 25 years loan with a grace period of 5 years with an interest of 1 percent.

The road network is part of a 125km Base-Nyagatare in Eastern Province. The road will be constructed in two phases, taking into account budgetary constraints.

The first phase involves improvement and asphalting of the 51.54 km Base-Gicumbi-Rukomo section, while the second phase includes the improvement and asphalting of the 73 km Rukomo-Ngarama-Nyagatare section.

During the visit, Gatabazi said that “We advised engineers on some accurate additions to make construction works better.”
