Rwandan side Rayon Sports Fc powered into the last eight of the CECAFA Kagame Cup 2018 as arch rivals APR FC missed out of the best losers spot to exit the tournament on Thursday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

On a Thursday evening when all last Group B matches kicked off at 5pm, AS Ports of Djibouti lost to Kenya’s Gor Mahia 0-2 at National Stadium while Rayon Sports FC defeated neighbors Lydia Ludic of Burundi 3-1 at Azam Sports Complex in Chamazi.

The Blues conceded an early goal from Lydia Ludic with Ugandan import Dan Wagaluka scoring a 20th minute penalty.

Nine minutes later, centre back Abdul Rwatubyaye equalized with a volley kick from Pierro Kwizera’s freekick. Both sides went into half time tied on a 1-all draw.

In the second half, Muhire Kevin scored the second goal for the Blues in the 49th minute before skipper Pierre Kwizera sealed Lydia Ludic’s fate with a third goal in the 71st minute to secure a deserved qualification for the 1998 Cecafa Kagame Cup winners.

At National Stadium, Gor Mahia earned a 2-0 goal victory over AS Ports to secure five points courtesy of goals scored by Otieno Philemon and Charles Momanyi.

Rayon Sports and Gor Mahia finished joint top in Group B with five points to book quarter final slots as two best ranked table leaders.

AS Ports finish ranked third on four points while Lydia Ludic are ranked bottom of the standings with only one point.

Best Losers

AS Ports of Djibouti and JKU of Zanzibar ended APR Fc’s hopes of reaching the last eight after they secured the only available best two losers’ spots with each side managing four points in their respective Group A and B.

Since Gor Mahia and Rayon Sports are tied on 5 points, +2 goal difference, 6 goals scored and 4 goals conceded, the official quarterfinal pairing was yet to be decided by CECAFA Secretariat by press time.

Quarter final round matches will begin on Sunday at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
