President Paul Kagame has met and held talks with his Russian counterpart President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin complex at the heart of Moscow, according to Office of the President.

The President is in Russia ahead of Opening Ceremony of 21st FIFA World Cup – a quadrennial International Football tournament due tomorrow in Russia.

Kagame is the current Chairperson of the African Union.

In the one-month football tournament, 32 teams will play 64 games in the quest to be crowned the world champions.

Of those 32 teams, five African teams will be vying to make history by becoming the first African side to win the prestigious trophy.

These include; Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia; Senegal and Morocco. Meanwhile, Kagame’s trip to Moscow comes barely two weeks after he hosted Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov.

His visit to Rwanda coincided with the 55 years anniversary of diplomatic relations between Rwanda and Russia.

Meanwhile, a joint coalition of US, Mexico and Canada won a bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They were competing with Morrocco, the North African country.
